The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, (NHIS) Professor Usman Yusuf, has been suspended.
The Minister for Health, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole approved the suspension, Thursday, to allow investigation into alleged fraud levelled against the NHIS Chief Executive.
The Federal Government had appointed Prof. Yusuf, as NHIS Executive Secretary on July 29, 2016.
The National Assembly through the Senate had earlier launched investigations into the activities of the NHIS boss whom they accused of “corrupt expenditure of N292 million for healthcare financing training; illegal expenditure of N218 million for training of staff; scandalous expenditure of N400 million purportedly for training during month of October 2016 ; and N50 million for T-shirts and face caps despite presidential order banning promotional items and souvenirs."
Senator Kabiru Mararfa (APC, Zamfara) had raised the allegations on March 21, 2017 in a motion he sponsored for probe of the NHIS boss. He said the expenditures were beyond the Executive Secretary's spending limit of N2.5million without appropriate approving authority.
The Minister has already directed that the most senior Manager in the organization should take the helm of affairs.
