The crisis within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has deepened as the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) expelled several top officials, including former National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam and National Youth Leader Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, over allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office.
The decision was announced on Thursday in Abuja following an NWC meeting that concluded months of investigation and disciplinary action.
The party’s national secretariat, SDP National Publicity Secretary Rufus Aiyenigba, said the expulsions followed the adoption of the Disciplinary Committee’s report and a white paper reviewing its findings and recommendations on the allegations against the affected members.
Aiyenigba recalled that on June 24, 2025, the NWC had suspended Gabam, Uchechukwu, and National Auditor Clarkson Nnadi after finding a prima facie case of financial impropriety and gross misconduct. To ensure fairness, an independent Disciplinary Committee was set up on July 4, 2025, which conducted a two-week investigation and submitted its report on July 18. The committee’s conclusions were later reviewed and adopted through a White Paper on August 15, leading to the latest decision.
Those affected include Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam (dismissed and expelled), Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu (dismissed and expelled), and Clarkson Nnadi (relieved of duties following his voluntary resignation). Eight other members, Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu, were also expelled for alleged disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s secretariat on July 28, 2025.
According to Aiyenigba, the expelled members were apprehended by security agents while in possession of sensitive documents and valuables reportedly taken from the secretariat and are now facing criminal prosecution.
He stated that the expulsions were necessary to restore integrity, discipline, and internal order within the SDP, adding that further administrative measures from the White Paper would be implemented to prevent future violations.
“The actions take immediate effect from Thursday, October 23, 2025,” Aiyenigba said, noting that the decision was unanimously approved by the NWC.
The NWC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and constitutional governance in the running of the party.
It will be recalled that the NWC had earlier suspended Gabam and others in June 2025 over allegations of gross financial misconduct, including embezzlement and diversion of party funds. The suspension followed a resolution backed by substantial evidence linking the officials to unauthorized financial dealings and mismanagement of the party’s accounts.
