The opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the state following the crises that trails the local government election in the state. There was a report of political tension in the State yesterday Monday, with some people reportedly killed in a clash by opposing parties.
However, the state government has rejected the call for a state of emergency by the APC, describing the action of wanting to grab power through the back door by deliberately causing mayhem in the state.
National Secretary of the APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru and the Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, were both guests on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday to discuss the Osun politics.
According to Senator Bashiru, when he was asked to suggest the solution to the current political crisis in Osun State, said, “I will suggest that perhaps it will be necessary for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency.
“It has gotten to that stage where hapless people coming from farms are attacked by uncontrollable PDP thugs.”
However, Alimi vehemently rejected the idea saying, “I call on our amiable president to reject the call of Honorable Bashiru and his cohorts. That is exactly what they are targeting; they deliberately caused mayhem in this state to grab power that they have failed to get through the ballot.
“We are going to publish the names of our members that have been killed. There is no Court of Appeal that restored them; we urge them to toe the line of peace.”
It was learned that at least two people died in Osun State on Monday as some reinstated Local Government chairmen and councilors across the state’s 30 local government councils resumed office at their respectful local government headquarters, claiming to be enforcing a court ruling.
The move that sparked resistance in places like Oshogbo, the state capital, Ikire and Irewole local government areas of the state, leading to the death of one of the reinstated council chairmen, Remi Abbas.
In response to restore orderliness, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical squads to the State to bolster security and restore law and order.
The police have condemned the incidents that disrupted peace and safety in the state, and have vow to bring the perpetrators to justice.
