The 30-year-old Russian star, playing in her first grand slam since Australia open 2016, she delivered an absorbing contest, lasting almost three hours as she hit 60 winners and 54 unforced errors, compared to Halep's return of 15 and 14.
Andy Murray has pulled out of the United States (US) Open, citing hip injury. The British World Number two made the announcement on Saturday in an emotional news conference at Flushing Meadows. According to him, "I tried obviously resting, rehabbing to try and get myself ready here. I was actually practicing OK the last few days but it's too sore for me to win the tournament, and ultimately that's what I was here to try and do."

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) yesterday was given a wildcard into the main draw of the US Open – last major of the season to former world number one, Maria Sharapova. The Russian five-time was granted the wildcard into her first time since her two-year doping ban for testing positive for heart disease drug meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.
