At the ongoing 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, Tobi Amusan has officially won Nigeria's first gold medal. Following her wins in Asaba (2018) and Mauritius (2022), the world record holder dominated the Women's 100-meter hurdles final on Wednesday, May 13. This was her third continental gold in the event.
Amusan qualified the quickest from the heats and semifinals, demonstrating her early determination. She kept up her pace throughout the final, finishing in 12.83 seconds. Amusan's triumph was evident despite the stadium's technological difficulties, including a broken timing system that delayed the official results. She said after the event that she had no idea what time it was, but winning was all that mattered.
It was a great performance for the green and white as a whole, not just for Tobi. With a time of 13.26 seconds, her fellow countrywoman Adaobi Tabugbo won the bronze, her first solo senior international medal for Nigeria. Ashley Miller of Zimbabwe won silver (13.24 seconds), keeping Nigeria from finishing 1-2.
On the second day of the championships, this triumph gave Team Nigeria a much-needed lift. Thanks to an outstanding team performance from Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and Patience Okon-George, Nigeria also won gold in the Mixed 4x400m relay as the day came to a close.
