Bafana Bafana of South African on Saturday, defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a 2019 AFCON qualifier, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The game which ended 0 - 2 in favour of the visiting team, marks the first time the South African National Team will be defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a Competitive game.
Rantie Tokelo gave Bafana Bafana the lead when he headed in a superb cross in the 55 minutes. The Eagle pushed more men forward to get an equaliser but, a quick counter attack in the 82 minutes saw Percy Tau latch on to a pass to beat goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi before calmly slotting the ball in, to double the lead.
The Eagles had started the game on a bright note with some quick passes. The home team created scoring chances in the first half put failed to convert them.
This was followed by a period of laid-back attitudes and poor passes which saw them lose the momentum to the South African. While the introduction of Ahmed Musa brought more live to the performance of the team, his solo effort failed to lift the team.
The defeat is also the first defeat for Super eagles’s German coach, Gernot Rohr, since he signed a two-year deal with the NFF.
