The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) concluded on Sunday, 6th February 2022 following the final match between Senegal and Egypt.
Senegal beat Egypt 4-2 during penalty shootouts following Sunday’s final which finished goalless at the end of extra time.
During the game, Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabel had saved a seventh-minute penalty taken by Senegal’s Sadio Mane at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Egypt missed out on the opportunity to clinch the cup for a record-breaking eighth time which would have been a first for Egypt’s star player and Liverpool player, Mohammed Salah.
The Senegalese Lions finally claimed their first AFCON cup following two previous final defeats in 2002 and 2019.
Senegal’s President, Macky Sall has declared Monday a public holiday to celebrate this new achievement for the country. The national team is expected to be decorated by President Sall at a ceremony on Tuesday.
Senegalese and Chelsea goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy won the award for best goalkeeper while his Senegalese teammate, Sadio Mane was crowned Man of the Competition.
Cameroonian striker, Vincent Aboubakar was crowned the top scorer and Golden boot after scoring eight goals in the tournament.
