WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that lets you choose whether others can share your status updates. This functionality is already available in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android, and it’s expected to be included in the public release soon. The feature is straightforward: by default, sharing will be turned off. If you’d like others to share your status updates, you’ll need to enable this option each time you create a status. When someone shares your status, you’ll be notified.
However, viewers of the shared status won’t know it was originally yours, protecting your privacy.
Also, if someone re-shares a status that was already shared, you won’t receive another notification, only the person who shared it initially will be informed. Essentially, a shared status generates a new version.
Previously, only people mentioned in a status update could share it. Now, with this feature, anyone can share your statuses, provided you give permission. This could significantly increase the reach of your statuses, if that’s what you’re aiming for.
