The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has warned Nigerians living in South Africa to remain vigilant amid a fresh wave of anti-foreigner protests expected to escalate in the coming days. The advisory, issued Friday and led by NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa, followed an official circular from the Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg. The document (Ref No: CGJHB/AD/209/VOL I), dated April 22, 2026, reported that demonstrations in East London, Cape Town, Durban, and across KwaZulu-Natal had already turned violent.
According to the consulate, the unrest has resulted in looting, destruction of property, and multiple injuries, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals, including Nigerians. The statement warned of “escalating demonstrations across the country,” urging strict compliance with safety advisories.
Intelligence contained in the circular further indicated that additional protests are scheduled to take place in Gauteng Province between April 27 and 29, 2026. Demonstrators are expected to intensify pressure on the South African government over the presence of foreign nationals.
“In response to the above, NiDCOM is advising all Nigerian citizens to avoid any confrontation with protesters, refrain from engaging with demonstration groups, and monitor local media outlets for real-time safety information,” the statement said.
The commission also urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding and take preventive measures to protect lives and property. Business owners were specifically advised to shut operations on Freedom Day, April 27, and consider remaining closed through April 29, noting that foreign-owned businesses are often targeted during such unrest.
NiDCOM reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s Consul-General in Johannesburg, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, stating that the consulate remains operational and is working with local security agencies. It added that diplomatic engagements are ongoing, with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, in talks with South African authorities to address the situation and ensure the safety of Nigerians.
