As part of efforts toward decongesting detention facilities in Cross River State, the state's Chief Judge, Justice Michael Edem on Saturday freed one hundred and twenty two (122) inmates serving various jail terms in Afokang Prison located in the capital city. Speaking with newsmen after granting the inmates amnesty, Justice Edem said the reason for the release was to decongest the prison.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has denied Maryam Sanda, the woman who allegedly killed her husband, bail. The court which arraigned her alongside her mother, brother and one other person on Thursday, said it was not inclined to grant her bail because no cogent reason was brought forward by the defence.
Human Right Activist and Lagos based lawyer, Femi Falana has said that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is a legacy of the military government and a partially illegal squad which needs to be completely overhauled.

Armed robbers attacked and shot at close range a female journalist working with the African Independent Television (AIT), after they robbed her of a mobile phone and other personnel effects along Edepie area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
Miss Onisofie Owei, who is the AIT correspondent attached to the State Government House, was shot about 10.30pm on Saturday, while she was returning home from "Shiloh 2017" church service organised by the Living Faith church also known as Winners Chapel.
Chief Damishi Sango, Plateau PDP Chairman and former sports minister, has been kidnapped by yet to be identified persons, on Wednesday, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. Plateau Police Command spokesman, Terna Tyopev, who confirmed this to the NAN on Thursday in Jos, said that Sango was abducted alongside others round Jere-Garkawa road in Kaduna State. “They were on their way from Jos to Abuja on Wednesday evening when the kidnappers abducted them,” he said.
