The number of deaths recorded from New Year attack on Benue communities by suspected herdsmen has increased.

Governor Samuel Ortom confirmed the number of casualties shortly after the state security council meeting held on Tuesday.

Five persons, including a pregnant woman, were earlier killed in Guma and Logo Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen while six livestock guards were killed in Sanghev ward.

Following an attack by suspected herdsmen on Odonto in Adim Akpa a community in Otukpo local council area of Benue State security forces have been deployed to the area.

The attack which occurred on Christmas eve left two people dead and two others wounded.

Governor Samuel Ortom while receiving visitors for this year’s Christmas homage, confirmed that security operatives, troops have been deployed contain the violence.

The Nigerian Military says its troops are in hot pursuit of fleeing Boko Haram insurgents after a failed attempted attack at Moloi area of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Rogers Nicholas disclosed this on Tuesday in a statement released to Newsmen in Maiduguri.

Troops serving under the Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State have killed 20 Boko Haram members and uncovered deadly weapons from them. A statement from the Deputy Director Public Relations, Colonel Timothy Antigha, on Wednesday, said the soldiers were able to arrest 17 of the sect members while rescuing over 100 people. The feat, according to Antigha, was made possible following a supported air bombardment by the Nigerian Air Force.
