The Federal Government of Nigeria has debunked claims of a ban on open grazing in the country, following widespread media reports asserting that the ban has been enforced.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, on Tuesday, at the inauguration of an ultramodern Veterinary Hospital in Yola, Adamawa State.

The minister maintained that no such policy had been declared, stating that the government is actually applying a gradual, well-planned shift from open grazing to modern ranching practices.

He revealed that Nigeria presently has 273 officially designated grazing areas, totaling over 4.5 million hectares.

“The Federal Government is working closely with the state governments to revitalize, equip, and make these reserves conducive for pastoralists and other livestock operators,” he said.

Maiha explained that the transition plan does not eliminate open grazing immediately, but offers practical alternatives aimed at strengthening productivity, minimizing conflicts, and facilitating a sustainable livestock system.

He stated that pastoralists, just like any other economic group, need an organized and well-structured business environment.

“The grazing reserves provided by law are meant to serve as business premises for all livestock activities.

“Our responsibility is to upgrade these reserves and facilitate their proper utilization”, he said.

The Minister urged Nigerians to disregard the false reports and depend on official government sources for reliable information on livestock development policies.
