Following the passage of the Student Loan Act and subsequent comments from professionals in education about its implication, the Federal Government has finally disclosed that it can no longer foot the universities bill. This was made known by, Andrew David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education yesterday in Abuja while shading more light on the details of the student loan Act that President Tinubu signed into law on Monday.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had yesterday signed a student loan Bill into law, thereby guaranteeing students interest-free credit for their studies. The president during his campaign in the build-up to electioneering had promised that if elected into office will propose a student loan Act that will guarantee Nigerian indigenes have access to loan facilities for study. Accordingly, less than a month into office, president Tinubu ensured that such a promise has come to pass as described by one of his aid, Dele Alake, it was the “fulfillment of one of his campaign promises to liberalize funding of education.” The Students Loan Act is Tinubu's second piece of legislation signed into law after assuming office on 29th May 2023. The bill is to let Nigerian students have access to interest-free loans to study which will be payable after the study.

No fewer than 20 officials, allegedly aiding and abetting examination malpractice have been arrested by the West African Examination Council, WAEC, in its ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, for school candidates. The Council said that the arrests were made in various parts of the country. The Head of National Office (HNO) of Council, Mr Patrick Areghan disclosed this on the sidelines of a monitoring exercise he carried out in some schools on Thursday in Lagos.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFUND, has approved the sum of N130 million as an intervention grant for Nigerian polytechnics for the 2023 intervention line scheduled as a stimulus for sponsoring skill acquisition across the polytechnics in the country. Director of Infrastructure of TETFUND, Mallam Buhari Mika’ilu, disclosed this at the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE/TETFUND sensitization workshop for the 2023 zonal Intervention on skill for Rectors and Directors of Skills for the benefiting polytechnics yesterday in Abuja.

The National Industrial Court has justified the no work, no pay rule by the Federal Government against the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This was delivered in a judgment by the President of the Court, Justice Benedict Kanyip.
According to the court, Federal Government has the right to withhold the salaries of workers who embark on industrial action.

The Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo insisted that youth development will continue to be prioritized by the Federal Government through policies and programmes that empower them not only for economic survival, but also to prepare them for the future leadership roles of the country. This was made known in his speech at the opening ceremony of the 50 years anniversary celebration of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Abuja on Monday.
