The Federal Government through the Ministry of Education has inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee to look into the proliferation of unapproved institutions and phony degree certificates within and outside of Nigeria.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to work out modalities for early resolution of industrial disputes before it snowballs into major crisis.

Following the investigative report by a Daily Nigerian Journalist of a university in Benin Republic that offers degree program in six months, the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Education has today announced the suspension of accreditation of all degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo till further notice.

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has disclosed that more than 3,900 teachers across the nation failed the November 2023 Professional Qualifying Examination, a mandatory test for professional teachers in Nigeria. This was revealed by the TRCN Registrar, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye on Monday during an interactive session with journalists in the nation's capital. The body revealed that only 72.9% of the 15,753 candidates who sat for the test in 38 centres nationwide passed. This translates to 3,963 teachers failing the assessment.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has applauded President Bola Tinubu led federal government over its resolution to exempt universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS). The student body said the move would serve as a catalyst that would usher a relief for the tertiary institutions in addressing persistent concerns raised by academic authorities over IPPIS bottleneck to the academicians. 

As issues bordering on the IPPIS payment system has continued unabated, the Joint Senate and House of Reps Committee on Education has yesterday declared that they will end interruption of academic activities in this administration. The joint committee took the decision during the 2024 budget defence when the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Chris Maiyaki appeared before it.
