The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has disclosed that more than 3,900 teachers across the nation failed the November 2023 Professional Qualifying Examination, a mandatory test for professional teachers in Nigeria. This was revealed by the TRCN Registrar, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye on Monday during an interactive session with journalists in the nation's capital. The body revealed that only 72.9% of the 15,753 candidates who sat for the test in 38 centres nationwide passed. This translates to 3,963 teachers failing the assessment.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has applauded President Bola Tinubu led federal government over its resolution to exempt universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions from the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS). The student body said the move would serve as a catalyst that would usher a relief for the tertiary institutions in addressing persistent concerns raised by academic authorities over IPPIS bottleneck to the academicians. 

As issues bordering on the IPPIS payment system has continued unabated, the Joint Senate and House of Reps Committee on Education has yesterday declared that they will end interruption of academic activities in this administration. The joint committee took the decision during the 2024 budget defence when the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof. Chris Maiyaki appeared before it. 

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the schedule for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). This was made known on Wednesday in a statement issued by Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser which stated that the main UTME will be held from April 19 to 29, 2024.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said that dearth in varsities was due to the surge in the exit of lecturers out of Nigeria and irregularities around the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS.

The Federal Government’s amnesty programme has sent out another batch of 20 more ex-militants from the Niger Delta region for a compulsory five-week mandatory training. When the training is completed, it will give the trainees a certification and type rating as licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers. According to the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, a 12-month on-the-job training (OJT) will precede this experience after which the trainees will graduate from the class course phase of the program.
