An education foundation in the country has figured out that multiple school levies imposed by schools is responsible for increasing the number of out-of-school children in the country. This was made known by the concern stakeholders during a ground-breaking summit titled ““Street to School: Panacea to a Menace”, on Nigeria’s out-of-school children crises hosted in Lagos state that ended today by a UK-based charity foundation, IA Foundation.

The Director General, National Teachers’ Institute, NTI, Prof. Musa Maitafsir, has disclosed plans to introduce a mandatory one-year Teacher Internship Programme for teachers in the country by January 2024. Maitafsir stated this on Thursday in Abuja when addressing journalists on the 2023 World Teachers’ Day with the theme: “The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage”. 

A Nigerian Educationist living in America, Prof. Busari Shamsudeen Akande has revealed why Nigerian parents and student chooses to visit Ghana or Togo for education as against Nigerian tertiary institutions. Akande said one of the reasons is that these two countries are considered by many as safer than the volatile Nigeria, also stable electricity supply and requirement for skilled workers are another quality these countries posses despite their higher tuition fees.

The United Nation International Children Education Fund, UNICEF has said that about 50% of out-of-school girl-children who are not attending any basic education in Nigeria are children from the northeast and the northwest part of the country. UNICEF Education Manager, Jutaro Sakamoto made this known in Abuja yesterday during an education conference organised by the French institute in Nigeria.

The Universal Basic Education Commission has disclosed that Nigeria currently needs an additional 20,000 schools and 907,769 classrooms to be able to absorb the over 10.5 million out-of-school children in the country. Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hammid Bobboyi, made this known while briefing the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, SAN, on the activities of the Commission.

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has revealed that the University of Abuja and some other universities are running unaccredited engineering programmes. This was made known to journalists on Friday by Ademola Adisa, the Registrar of the Council, adding that the universities have failed to update their licenses for various engineering courses.
