A new Exit Benefit Scheme that would give departing Federal Civil Servants a gratuity equal to 100% of their entire yearly salary has been authorized by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The program, which takes effect on January 1, 2026, is intended to ensure that officers who have worked for the Federal Civil Service for 10 years or more retire with respect and financial stability. The permission was verified in a statement signed on Thursday by Eno Olotu, Director of Public Relations in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
The Office of the Head of the Civil Service established an Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee, which provided technical advice and lengthy discussions before making the decision. To create a long-lasting, significant implementation framework, the committee collaborated with the National Pension Commission, the Federation's Budget Office, and the Federation's Office of the Accountant-General. In addition to the current Contributory Pension Scheme, the Exit Benefit Scheme offers federal officers in treasury-funded ministries, extra-ministerial departments, and agencies a significant financial safety net.
The approval was a turning point for federal employees, according to Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. According to her, the choice shows that the Tinubu administration values the commitment, selflessness, and expertise of federal civil servants.
“This approval is a profound acknowledgement of the invaluable contributions of our Civil Servants who have devoted their productive years to public service and national development. The Exit Benefit Scheme significantly enhances the retirement package of our officers and boosts confidence in the Federal Government’s commitment to their welfare.”
Walson-Jack stated. She promised that comprehensive implementation guidelines would be released in due course. She stated that the plan is in line with current changes intended to create a more motivated, performance-driven, and people-centered Civil Service.
The government's ongoing emphasis on bolstering welfare policies and safeguarding the future of the Civil Service is demonstrated by the payment of gratuities to Federal Civil Servants, which occurs 22 years after the Contributory Pension Scheme was introduced.
