In a recent media chat, Ajibola Basiru, National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), addressed mounting rumors about President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election plans. Basiru confirmed that Tinubu’s intention to run for the 2027 election has received widespread backing from party stakeholders. Basiru emphasized that the conversation around a possible vice president alongside the president is still premature. Noting that, the national summit held at the Presidential Villa has thrown its weight behind President Tinubu, recognizing his performance so far.
Across a broad spectrum of the APC, there is strong support for his re-election. But the matter of a running mate hasn’t come up yet. No one has suggested that the President is dissatisfied with Vice President Shettima or considering a change.
The clarification comes amid rising tensions in the party’s North-East bloc.
Just last Sunday, a meeting of APC stakeholders in Gombe State took a contentious turn when the party’s North-East Vice Chairman, Mustapha Salihu, endorsed President Tinubu for another term, without acknowledging Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The omission sparked a backlash, reportedly led by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who demanded that Shettima’s name be included in any future endorsement.
