Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, on Monday, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political opposition outlook ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The registration was completed days after Atiku disclosed his intentions to ADC supporters and key stakeholders in Adamawa.
The occasion had images and videos of Atiku’s convoy entering the town amid enthusiastic crowds who played drums, sang, and held placards bearing his portrait. Meanwhile, the former vice president, after his registration, was seen waving at well-wishers from his vehicle as he collected his ADC membership card.
In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, confirming the development, Atiku wrote, “It's official.-AA”
This development officially seals Atiku’s affiliation with the coalition party, which he had supported in July as a unifying platform for opposition figures—including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal—to take on President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Up to this point, Atiku and other opposition leaders had stalled on formally joining the ADC.
His registration is now anticipated to boost the party’s visibility and reinforce the broader opposition as the next general election approaches.
