Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has ruled out the possibility of serving as a vice-president candidate in the 2027 general elections. Speculations had mounted that the former Rivers State governor could emerge as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is believed to be positioning himself as the flagbearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
However, speaking at an event in Abuja, Amaechi dismissed the reports, insisting that he is not inclined to play a subordinate role.
“I will not be vice president to anybody. There are too many reasons why I won’t be vice president to anybody.
“The first reason is that I’m too presidential to be vice,” he said.
Amaechi, who is also seeking the ADC’s presidential ticket, argued that the challenge with the office of vice president in Nigeria goes beyond ceremonial functions and is rooted in its structure.
According to him, the position is designed to be subordinate, largely powerless, and dependent on the disposition of the president.
“We will quarrel, instead of that, I would rather be a minister than be a vice president,” Amaechi added.
