Ferdinand described England’s remaining run of fixtures as an opportunity, for them to get to the final of the European Championship this year. Gareth Southgate’s side will face Slovakia in the Round of 16 on Sunday evening. They will face Switzerland in the last-8 if they defeat Slovakia.

Finidi George has resigned as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles following the announcement to appoint a foreign technical adviser by the Nigeria Football Federation. This decision to hire a foreign technical adviser came amidst dissatisfaction with the team’s recent performances, including a crucial defeat to Benin Republic that left the Super Eagles struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Finidi, who was unveiled as the head coach earlier this year, had signed a one-year contract with the NFF, with the possibility of extension based on performance in the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.

Sarkic, a Montenegro international, joined the Championship club from Wolves in August 2023 and made 33 appearances last season. He last played for his country in a 2-0 friendly defeat by Belgium on 5 June.
The Montenegro Football Association (FSCG) said Sarkic died suddenly on Saturday morning, with local media reporting he collapsed at his apartment in Budva. The FSCG described Sarkic as a “beloved member” of the national squad and an “eternally smiling guy”.

The qualifying draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa on July 4, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The 48 competing teams will be split into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group reaching the finals in Morocco. The tournament hosts will be included in the draw but, given the Atlas Lions are already assured of qualification; only one team in their group will book a ticket to Morocco.
