FIFA U-17 W'World Cup : Flamingos Secure Thrilling Late Victory Over Dominican Republic

In a dramatic finish, Nigeria’s women’s U-17 national team, the Flamingos, clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory against hosts Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo during the ongoing 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. Shakirat Moshood netted the decisive goal in the 89th minute with a stunning left-footed strike from 24 yards out, marking her fourth goal of the tournament.

The match, played under challenging rainy conditions, showcased a resilient Dominican side that effectively stifled Nigeria's attacking prowess. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple chances, the Flamingos struggled to convert, with an early attempt from Moshood ruled offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Captain Taiwo Afolabi also forced a save from the Dominican goalkeeper shortly thereafter, but it was Moshood’s late strike that ultimately sealed the win.

With this victory, the Flamingos completed the group stage with a perfect record, amassing nine points and topping Group A ahead of Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, and New Zealand. They have been in remarkable form throughout the tournament, scoring eight goals while conceding just one.

Coach Bankole Olowokoore expressed confidence in his team’s potential to make Nigeria proud, saying, “I want to thank Nigerians for their support. We promise to deliver joy every time they watch us.”

Notably, the match drew a record attendance of 13,535 spectators, making it the highest-attended football match for any Dominican Republic national team.

In preparation for this match, Olowokoore made three key changes to the starting lineup, introducing Rokibat Azeez, Blessing Ifitezue, and Ramotalahi Kareem. Despite these adjustments, the Flamingos managed only one goal from 16 corner kicks, underscoring the need for greater efficiency in front of goal.
