Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, has admitted that Arsene Wenger has left a big vacuum for Arsenal to fill after the Frenchman announced he will leave the club at the end of the season after 22 years.
Wenger announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season in a statement on Friday.
Kanu who joined Arsenal from Inter Milan in 1999 in an Instagram post on Friday paid glowing tribute to Wenger.
“Big shoes for anyone to fill, playing for Arsenal under Arsene was one of the best periods of my career, two premiership titles, 2 FA Cups, The Invincibles, playing with some of the best assembled players, influencing millions of fans in West Africa to support this great club are some of the memories that come to the fore today but above all the privilege to have played for a gentleman like Wenger is most cherished.” Kanu wrote and posted a throwback picture of when he joined Arsenal.
Kanu made 198 appearances and scored 44 goals in his five-year spell at Arsenal.
Former Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie also thanked Wenger for his faith in him during his tim at the club.
Van Persie had an injury ravaged spell at the start of his career at the club.
“Thanks Arsene for all your confidence in me over the years. You are a very special man and a top coach! Definitely one of the very best ever,” Van Persie wrote on Twitter.
“I will always see you as my footballing father where under your guidance I had the chance to grow as a man and a player, I’m forever thankful for that and wish you all the very best for the next chapter in your life! #ThanksArsene #TheBoss”
