A suspect linked to the murder of a South African university student was fatally shot during an exchange of gunfire with the police. Authorities discovered the body of Olorato Mongale on Sunday in Lombardy, north of Johannesburg, just two hours after she was reported missing following a date. In the early hours of Friday, officers tracked down the main suspect at a residential complex in Amanzimtoti, a coastal town, according to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe. The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, opened fire on the officers, who responded with gunfire, ultimately killing him, Brigadier Mathe reported.
Mongale’s death has ignited heated discussions about the high levels of violence against women in South Africa.
The search continues for two other individuals believed to be involved in her murder. Meanwhile, the police have arrested the deceased suspect’s parents.
The suspect’s mother allegedly helped him evade capture by warning him of the police presence at her home, while his father is believed to be the owner of a VW Polo allegedly used in the crime.
