The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood will likely be subject to terrorism sanctions later this month, according to proposals outlined by the United States. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, signed a press release from the US Department of State on Monday, revealing the plan. According to Rubio's announcement, "Terrorist Designation of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood," the department has classified the group as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and plans to name it as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on March 16, 2026.
Rubio declared, "Today, the Department of State is designating the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and intends to designate the group as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, effective March 16, 2026."
He claimed that during the ongoing battle in Sudan, the gang had engaged in brutality against civilians.
The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood propagates its militant Islamist ideology and undermines attempts to end the crisis in Sudan by using unchecked violence against civilians. Mass murders of civilians have been carried out by its militants, many of whom receive training and other assistance from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to the statement.
Additionally, Rubio mentioned that the al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade of the group had already received approval.
"The al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood was designated in September 2025 in accordance with Executive Order 14098 for its involvement in Sudan's brutal war," he continued.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was also charged by the US Secretary of State with encouraging extremist activity.
The Iranian dictatorship, which is the world's top state sponsor of terrorism, has used its IRGC to fund and oversee harmful actions around the world. Rubio declared, "The United States will use every tool at its disposal to deny the Iranian regime and Muslim Brotherhood chapters the means to participate in or support terrorism."
The statement claims that the action was carried out in accordance with Executive Order 13224 and Section 219 of the US Immigration and Nationality Act, which gives the government the authority to identify and punish terrorist organizations.
