The International Criminal Court, ICC has revealed that it will “analyse materials” it has gotten about the violence which hit Nigeria last month following #EndSARS protests against police brutality. It said that it was conducting a preliminary investigation into the protests. In a statement, the office of the ICC prosecutor had earlier said it had received information on alleged crimes. Youths under the #EndSARS had taken to the streets to protest against police brutality, calling for the disbandment of the unit. The unit was subsequently disbanded and a replacement announced by the police authorities. This however did not suppress the protests as the youths insisted that the action must go further than disbandment of the unit, thereby the protests continued. The protest became violent ridden.

The Justice Isa Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry is set to finish their investigation into the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The panel would likely conclude its assignment this week and would subsequently send its report to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Northern Governors Forum, pledged their support towards the effort by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to regulate the use of social media in order to checkmate the spread of fake news. The administration has made regulating social media its priority, blaming the social media for the spread of ‘fake news’ which it says can destroy the country if left unchecked. The forum expressed its support in a communiqué issued by its Chairman and Governor of Plateau, Mr Simon Lalong, on Monday after its meeting in Kaduna with traditional rulers and other key stakeholders in the region. The NGF members, who noted the devastating effect of the uncontrolled use social media in spreading fake news, called for major control mechanisms and censorship of the social media practice in Nigeria.

The Minister of Defence, Maj Gen Bashir Salihi Magashi has said that the United States Army got necessary permission from the Nigerian government to conduct the rescue operation with lead to the liberation of its citizen held captive in northern Nigeria. Magashi in an interview shortly after defending his Ministry’s budget at the National Assembly on Tuesday, told journalists that Nigeria gave permission to the US “as a friendly country” almost as soon as it was contacted by the government. The minister said the country was doing the best it could with the available resources at the disposal of the military to deploy adequate technology in its operations. He however said that Nigeria would explore the current partnership with the United states tackle insurgency in the country.

The Chairman, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that seven Nigerians who took part in the #EndSARS Protest in Egypt have been scheduled for deportation.

Following the wake of the #EndSARS protest that claimed about 22 lives of policemen across the country, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has frowned at some policemen for their failure to return back to their various duty posts. The commission said the police service rules have prescribed a dismissal to any officer or men of the Nigerian Police Force who deserts his duty post for a stipulated number of days, while advising them that being a religion practicing individuals they should take the demise of their colleagues in good faith and return back to their duty posts. Although the PSC noted that no policeman deserves to be killed in his line of duty, not just as an officer but as a fellow human being, however, the deed has been done by the hoodlums and they should just face the reality and return back to work.
