Ebonyi State now has the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law.

Governor Dave Umahi gave his assent on Monday, at a ceremony at the Executive Council chambers in Abakaliki. The ceremony was attended by his wife, Rachel and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

The Speaker , Mr Francis Nwifuru said the law forbids violence against persons, prohibits Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and protects women against all manners of violence, including wife battering.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticised US President Donald Trump’s comments on the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

During a joint press conference with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday, Trump said the US will not accept the attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria.

Reacting to the US president’s position, MURIC urged Nigerian Christians to “not allow themselves to be deceived by Trump”.

Nigeria has taken delivery of some military gunships following the arrival of the Antonov aircraft from Russia. The airlift cargo aircraft bearing the 2 additional brand new Mi-35M helicopter gunships touched down at the Nigerian Air Force NAF Base in Makurdi, Benue state at exactly 12.20pm.

At least 14 miners were killed and 13 others injured when armed bandits attacked Janruwa community in Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the gunmen invaded a mining site located in the community and opened fire on the miners who were armless.

Locals in the community noted that 14 people were killed in the process.

The Federal Government has ordered the payment of N135 million as compensation for the families of those who were killed and wounded at some squatters in the Apo Area of Abuja.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami on Thursday said the decision to compensate the victims was based on findings by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) that they were not Boko Haram members as was alleged by security agencies.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is planning to embark on peaceful protest and prayers against unending killings and freedom of Leah Sharibu and Chibok schools girls on Sunday, April 29.

CAN made the declaration in a statement following the killing of two Catholic priests; Rev.Fr Joseph Gor, Rev.Fr Felix Tyolaha and 17 worshippers of St. Ignatius Quasi Parish, Ukpor-Mbalom, Gwer East LGA of Benue State.
