The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has called for strict compliance with the timetable for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November this year. Speaking during a consultative meeting with political party leaders in Abuja on Wednesday, Yakubu announced that political parties must conduct their primaries to select candidates between March 20 and April 10, 2025.
He stated, “Let me remind political party leaders that the primaries for nominating candidates for the Anambra governorship election will take place from March 20 to April 10, 2025, which is just two months away.”
Yakubu also emphasized INEC’s commitment to other electoral activities, noting that under Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the commission must issue a notice of elections at least 360 days before the election date.
Additionally, Yakubu provided updates on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election. He revealed that the next Area Council election is scheduled for February 21, 2026, as the current tenure of chairmen and councilors will expire next year.
“Voting will occur in all designated polling units across the 68 constituencies to elect six Area Council chairmen and 62 councilors,” he said.
The INEC chairman urged political parties to adhere to timelines for primaries and campaigns to ensure a seamless electoral process.
