The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office, stating that his decision was driven by responsibility and statesmanship rather than any admission of wrongdoing. In a resignation letter addressed to Governor Abba Yusuf and made available to journalists, Gwarzo said he stepped down voluntarily to enable the government and the state to function without distractions.
“I, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, hereby tender my voluntary resignation from office, with effect from 27th March 2026, pursuant to Section 306 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). This decision has been reached after careful consultations and deep reflection, guided by my current experience, commitment to the peace, stability, and overall interest of the good people of Kano State,” he said.
Gwarzo further explained, “In view of the prevailing circumstances, I have taken this step in the spirit of responsibility and statesmanship, to allow the government and the State to move forward without undue distractions. This resignation is made voluntarily and in good faith. It should not be construed as an admission of any wrongdoing, but rather as a conscious decision in the interest of institutional integrity, democratic values, and public service.”
The development was also confirmed in a statement by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which described the decision as difficult but necessary for the stability of governance in Kano State.
“The Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office… This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” the statement read in part.
The movement noted that recent developments had hindered Gwarzo’s ability to fully perform his duties.
“Recent circumstances have, to a considerable extent, constrained the full realisation of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office of the deputy governor,” it stated, adding that “it has become imperative to allow the office to function optimally in the best interest of the public it is meant to serve.”
It also dismissed any suggestion that the resignation was linked to wrongdoing, particularly allegations raised by the Kano State House of Assembly.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him,” the group emphasised. “The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people.”
According to the movement, the resignation is aimed at reducing political tension and demonstrating leadership.
“Rather, this step is a demonstration of statesmanship and a commitment to peace, political maturity, and the avoidance of unnecessary tensions that may hinder governance and development in the state,” it added.
Looking ahead, Gwarzo is expected to focus on political activities within the Kwankwasiyya Movement as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
“He has resolved to dedicate more time and energy to the Kwankwasiyya Movement… in strengthening its structures, rebuilding strategies, and engaging in critical political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement said.
The Kano State House of Assembly had earlier accused Gwarzo of misconduct related to the discharge of his duties and initiated moves to impeach him.
