Apple's latest silicon refresh has quietly addressed a hardware bottleneck that many users once blamed on software. With the introduction of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, the company has re-engineered a key part of its MacBook architecture, improving bandwidth performance across its high-speed ports while leaving its much-praised headphone system untouched.


The most significant change lies in the way the new chips handle connectivity. Previous MacBook Pro models powered by the M4 Pro featured Thunderbolt 5 ports that shared controllers on the chip. In practical terms, that meant an external display, audio interface and storage drive could end up competing for bandwidth when used simultaneously.

For professionals juggling video editing, large file transfers and audio production, that shared pipeline created a higher risk of performance hiccups under heavy load. Dropouts and slowdowns were not uncommon in demanding workflows.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max resolve that constraint. EachThunderbolt 5 port now receives its own dedicated controller built directly into the system-on-chip. Apple describes it as "the industry's most capable implementation of Thunderbolt 5."

In practice, that means a producer running an RME or Universal Audio interface on one port, a 4K monitor on another and an external SSD on a third can expect dedicated throughput across each connection. For high-bandwidth, mixed-use setups, it is a meaningful structural upgrade.

Yet for many audio professionals, the more consequential component sits just inches away: the headphone jack. While Apple’s marketing around the M5 chips highlights connectivity gains, the audio output itself remains unchanged from the standard introduced in October 2021 with the M1 Pro.

At the heart of that continuity is a headphone jack designed with built-in intelligence. Plug in high-impedance headphones such as the Sennheiser HD 600 at 300 ohms, and the MacBook automatically detects the load and switches to 3V RMS output. Lower-impedance in-ear monitors under 150 ohms receive 1.25V instead, preventing distortion or overdrive without requiring user adjustment.

At 3V into 300 ohms, the output delivers roughly 30 milliwatts of power, sufficient to drive the HD 600 to approximately 112 decibels sound pressure level, louder than a typical rock concert. For a laptop headphone jack, the output is unusually robust.

Independent measurements reinforce that performance. Audio Science Review’s tests of the 2024 MacBook Air, which shares identical published audio specifications, recorded a Signal-to-Noise and Distortion ratio (SINAD) of 97.9 dB, with frequency response remaining ruler-flat to 16 kHz. The figures placed the MacBook’s headphone output ahead of dedicated interfaces such as the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.

Subjective impressions have echoed the data. One Head-Fi user who compared the MacBook Pro’s output with an AudioQuest DragonFly Red reported the sound “seemed more expansive, yet also more refined in tone.” Another user wrote that the MacBook Air M2 “drives my HD600 like a champ.”

Apple itself has acknowledged the capability, stating in a support document: “This may remove the need for an external headphone amplifier,” adding a note of caution that suggests understatement more than limitation.

There remain scenarios where external digital-to-analog converters justify their place. Playback of DSD files or material mastered above 96 kHz requires external conversion. Balanced output via 4.4mm Pentaconn or XLR connections also necessitates additional hardware, as do notoriously difficult-to-drive planar magnetic headphones such as the HiFiMAN Susvara. Crosstalk performance, measured around -50 dB, trails the -80 to -120 dB figures achieved by high-end dedicated units.

Even so, those limitations describe a narrower audience than the thriving market for portable DACs might imply. Most listeners pairing a $200 dongle DAC with streaming services and mainstream headphones do not approach those edge cases.

For typical dynamic headphones, in-ear monitors and standard hi-resolution formats, Apple’s built-in jack is effectively transparent. The engineering question of whether the MacBook sounds “good enough” has largely been settled by measurements. The lingering debate may be less about performance and more about whether audiophiles are willing to abandon the ritual of adding another box to the signal chain.

Meanwhile, Apple’s cultural reach surfaced in an unexpected way this week. In a separate launch moment, the company featured Fela Kuti’s 1971 classic “Let’s Start” in a promotional video for the MacBook Air M5, pairing Afrobeat’s vibrant horns with visuals of the ultra-thin device handling AI-assisted workflows and multitasking. For many viewers, the soundtrack commanded as much attention as the hardware itself.

The choice arrives 28 years after Fela’s death in 1997 and just months after he received a posthumous Grammy honour at the Recording Academy’s 2026 Special Merit Awards in Los Angeles. While Apple has not publicly explained the selection, the move was widely interpreted as recognition of Afrobeat’s global influence, and a reminder that technological innovation and cultural legacy often intersect in unexpected ways.
