A civil society organization, Media Initiative against Injustice, Violence and Corruption (MIIVOC) has warned the Federal Government to immediately act on the report of the Committee to harmonize issues around the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Agency Bill, to save the nation from imminent expulsion from the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units.

The group also charged the government to call the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to order, adding that the consequences of Nigeria’s expulsion would be far-reaching for the local economy.

Executive Director of MIIVOC, Dr. Walter Duru, who gave the warning while addressing newsmen in Abuja, Tuesday, expressed shock at what he described as the desperation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to retain control of the NFIU, against the interest of the country and international best practice.

In a landmark judgment, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, Tuesday, set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja delivered on February 22nd, 2016 by Justice E. S. Chukwu which dismissed a ‘no-case-submission’ filed by Sani Abdullahi Lulu, a former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the corruption charge brought against him and three others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Justice Ahmad Belgore in his judgment, said: “This appeal has merit and the judgment of the Federal High Court, delivered on February 22, 2016 is hereby set aside and the appellant, Sani Abdullahi Lulu, discharged acquitted.”

Femi Falana, the human rights lawyer, says the extradition of some Cameroonian separatist leaders could attract sanction from the United Nations.

On January 26, the federal government extradited separatist leaders, who were arrested at a hotel in Abuja.

In a letter addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari, Falana said the deportees were not illegal immigrants.

The lawyer said they were gathered at the Abuja hotel to discuss challenges faced by over 10,000 Cameroonians who have sought political asylum in Nigeria.

The documents received by the Administrative Panel of Inquiry (API) have reinforced the claim that the suspended Director-General, Securities and Exchange Committee (SEC), Mounir Gwarzo, was a director in two private companies.

The 18 page documents obtained by our correspondent showed that Gwarzo was indeed a director and shareholder at Medusa Investments Limited and Outbound Investment Limited.

The United Nations Refugees Agency has criticised Nigeria for breaching international treaties after forcefully deporting a Cameroonian Anglophone separatist and his supporters.

UNHCR said that most of those handed over to Yaoundé authorities had applied for asylum in Nigeria.
