The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced that Universities and other tertiary institutions conducting degree programmes would no longer directly admit candidates on their sandwich, distance learning, part-time and other programmes unless the candidates' admission is processed through JAMB. This was disclosed on Monday by JAMB’s, Head of Media and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin in the new advisory of the board’s weekly news bulletin. The news bulletin reads, “The JAMB would no longer condone any illegal/irregular admission by any institution.

The national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the team from the Federal Government are scheduled to meet this week towards averting another round of industrial action by the university lecturers. The Chairman, Lagos Zone of ASUU, Dr. Adelaja Oduloya, while speaking with newsmen over the weekend, said the meeting is expected to hold within the week, going by assurances from the government side. It was revealed that the date for the meeting is to be communicated to the leadership of ASUU during the week by the government team which will include officials of the Ministries of Education and Labour, the ministers and leaders of some relevant government agencies. “As a union, we are not opposed to negotiation and amicable resolution of issues. In this case, we are awaiting the government team to call us for the meeting, they said it going to be this week, we are waiting. They have not given us the date but we are waiting.

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife in Osun State, has shut down the academic institution “until further notice” following protests that erupted following the untimely death of 24-year-old final year student of the school, Adesina Omowumi Aishat. In a statement on Friday evening, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abiodun Olarewaju, said the move was aimed at preventing the breakdown of order as the students, who were protesting over the death of a Year 4 student, Adesina Omowumi Aishat, blocked the Ife/Ibadan and Ife/Ede roads. He said the management ordered immediate closure of the school and asked the students to vacate their hall of residence before 12 pm on Saturday. “Therefore, having exhausted all necessary avenues to call the students to order and allow normalcy to return to the campus and its environs, the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, have accordingly closed down the school until further notice. This is to forestall further breakdown of law and order. The swearing-in ceremony of newly-elected Students’ Union members has also been suspended, the statement added. “In the meantime, the University management has put in place the machinery to unravel the circumstances surrounding the immediate and remote cause(s) of the crisis,” it said.

The Wife of Tunji Bello, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, LASU. Her appointment was announced in a statement by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, titled, ‘Sanwo-Olu approves appointment of Vice Chancellor for LASU’, on Thursday. “Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Olusola-Sanwo-Olu has approved the appointment of Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello as the 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University. “Professor Olatunji-Bello was appointed following a recommendation by the Joint Committee of Council and Senate of LASU in accordance with the LASU Law, Cap 169 Vol 7, Laws of Lagos State. Olatunji Bello, a professor of medicine, had served as Acting Vice-Chancellor in the past before the elevation.

The Kaduna State government has made public the resumption of schools in the state on Sunday 12th, 2021 after months of disruption of academic sessions following the security unrest in the state.

The Lagos State Government has said it will resume the year 2021/2022 academic session for public and private schools across the state on Monday, September 13, 2021. Model colleges and upgraded schools will resume in batches from September 19. Commissioner for Education, Folasade Adefisayo in a statement said for model and upgraded, SS2 students seeking placement into SS3 will resume September 19, and revision for this class would run from 20th to 26th September while promotion examination to SS3 class would start from 27th September to 8th October 2021.
