The Federal Government has approved the reopening of all schools as well as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps since its closure in March 2020 as part of preventive measures to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF), Dr Sani Aliyu made the announcement on Thursday during a media briefing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, saying the PTF recommended a phased return of educational institutions.

Following the directive of school re-opening by some states, the Academic Staff Union of the Nigerian Universities (ASUU) has today warned the federal Government that doing so is suicidal as all our tertiary institutions were already overcrowded. The Academic body said the social distancing and adherence to some COVID-19 protocols is near impossible considering the nature of our schools. Therefore, ASUU warned that going ahead to open schools would only increase the spread of the coronavirus. Prof. Emmanuel Osedeke, the National Vice President of ASUU while conducting an interview with newsmen called on the federal government to upgrade the tertiary institutions if the schools must resume.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amechi, has revealed that the $50 million Transport University that is set to be built in Daura, Katsina state was penciled to be executed for free by the Chinese authority. Amechi stated this at Daura, Katsina state during his maiden visit paid to the ongoing project, not only that, he stated the Technique Engineering Architectural Marketing (TEAM), the project consultants has also pledged to provide their services free of charge.

Following the impact of the coronavirus on the economy in Nigeria, Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed yesterday that the Federal government has concluded plan to create a “Payroll support” for private school teachers and artisans in the country. Osinbajo also revealed their administration has already secured some hectares of land in about 11 states of the federation to build thousands of houses of two-bedroom apartments at the cost of N2 million to address the housing deficit in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Channels Television, John Momoh as the acting Chairman of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Governing Council. The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono made this known in a letter titled, "Emergency Meeting of the Governing Council of University of Lagos" where he urged Momoh, who is also the president of the UNILAG Alumni Association to convene an emergency meeting in a bid to approve the nomination of Prof. Folasade Ogunsola as acting Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Following the protest that broke out at the University of Lagos last two weeks by, the Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU). And the subsequent appointment of an ad-hoc committee by President Muhammadu Buhari, to investigate the matter and proffer solution. The Senate of the University of Lagos has finally settled for Prof. Folasade Ogunsola as the Acting Vice-Chancellor.
