The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has recently announced a slight decrease in River Benue’s water levels, lowering the risk of severe flooding. This was revealed by the NIHSA’s Director-General, Mr. Umar Mohammed, in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja. Mohammed reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to monitoring the water levels of the nation’s major rivers and tributaries, as part of Nigeria's overall flood management strategy.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements to surrender now or be neutralised. He gave the warning in Abuja yesterday during a lecture organised by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). “Enough is enough. This has to stop. And it will stop. This is a warning to them. They have limited time,” the President added. He was represented by National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. The lecture with the theme: “Insecurity in the Sahel (2008-2024): Dissecting Nigeria’s challenges – genesis, impacts, and options,” provided a platform to address the enormous security challenges in the region.
The upper chamber of Nigeria’s legislature on Wednesday rejects a bill for an act to license operation and practice of private investigations in the country. The bill sponsored by Senator Osita Ngwu, was rejected by the majority of lawmakers during debate on the floor of the House. Ngwu, the Senate Minority Whip, said the bill seeks amongst others, to provide a framework for the licensing and practice of private investigators in the country, as well as provide for a system of regulation, control and conduct of the practice so as to maintain professional standards.
The German Government on Wednesday, October 2, announced an additional release of €24 million to Nigeria and other countries in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions affected by the recent flooding. The additional fund is meant to support people affected by severe flood disasters. This was disclosed through a statement by the German embassy in Abuja. The latest support brings to €100million (N185 billion) in 2024 alone German humanitarian assistance in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin region.
Following the continued incidents of flood ravaging the country, the Federal government has directed that an integrity test be conducted on all dams in Nigeria. This development was revealed during the National broadcast of President Bola Tinubu when addressing the nation on the occasion of its 64th-year celebration. He said the measure is aimed at averting future disasters.
The Nigerian Police Force has deployed men and equipment across the Federal territory ahead of October 1 planned #Endbadgovernance protest. The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 7, AIG Benneth Igweh, informed that the Federal Capital Territory, FCT command has deployed equipment’s, Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) personnel, anti-riot equipment, visibility policing, among others to ensure that residents are adequately secured.
