At least 26 people have been killed and 61 others injured following an explosion at a fireworks factory in Changsha, according to state media, in one of the deadliest industrial accidents in China this year. The blast occurred on Monday at the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company, triggering a large-scale emergency response. Nearly 500 firefighters, rescue workers and medical personnel were deployed to the scene to contain the aftermath and assist victims.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media platforms showed thick plumes of smoke rising into the air, with structures collapsing and debris scattered across a wide area, underscoring the magnitude of the explosion.
State news agency Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping ordered a swift and comprehensive investigation into the incident, calling for strict accountability and stronger enforcement of safety regulations in high-risk industries.
Changsha is widely known as a major hub for fireworks production, an industry that plays a significant economic role but has long faced scrutiny over safety standards and operational risks.
China remains the dominant player in the global fireworks market, exporting more than two-thirds of the world’s supply, with shipments valued at over one billion dollars in the past year.
Industrial accidents involving fireworks factories and chemical plants are relatively frequent in China, often attributed to safety violations, weak regulatory enforcement and hazardous working conditions.
One of the most notable incidents occurred in 2015, when a massive explosion at a chemical warehouse in Tianjin killed more than 170 people, prompting nationwide safety reforms and tighter oversight of hazardous industries.
Despite these reforms, smaller-scale explosions at manufacturing facilities have continued to occur, raising ongoing concerns about compliance gaps and enforcement challenges, particularly in rapidly industrialising regions.
Authorities have said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the Changsha explosion, with efforts focused on preventing similar tragedies in the future.
