Students of the University of Ibadan have begun a fresh protest in response to the recent hike in school fees, following the university governing council’s endorsement of the increase. This action comes after a circular released on Thursday by the council’s secretary, G.O. Saliu, confirmed the council’s endorsement. According to PUNCH, the circular stated that the university governing council had “considered the reviewed schedule of levies for newly admitted and returning undergraduate students in the 2023/2024 academic session and approved it as recommended by the university Senate.”

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) convened a crucial meeting on Wednesday aimed at averting a nationwide strike by university lecturers. The Ministry of Youth Development has revealed its plans to introduce a training program equivalent to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program for graduates of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) This initiative aims to provide NCE holders with the same opportunities for national service currently available to university graduates. The federal government through the Federal Ministry of Education has begun implementation of the recommendations of the investigative panel that was set up on January 9, 2024, to investigate counterfeit universities milling fake degrees to Nigerians. The membership which was made of 12-member investigative panel, chaired by the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri and Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Committee of Vice Chancellors, Prof. Jibrila Amin, had proposed some strict recommendations in its report and has since been submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Following the indiscriminate cropping of illegal colleges of education in the state, the Bauchi State Government has closed down 39 of such schools due to lack of following due process in its registration. This was made known today by the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Mrs Lydia Tsammani, who convened a press conference in Bauchi town, the capital of Bauchi state.
