The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has applauded the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for sanctioning three media houses station for spreading unverified news items over the EndSARS protest. This was contained in a statement by, Niyi Akinsiju, Secretary of the group, and Cassidy Madueke, saying the said media houses violated the extant rules guiding broadcasting practice.
The Police in Edo state announced that it has rearrested at least, ten of the 1,993 inmates, who escaped from the Oko Correctional Centre on Airport Road, Benin and the Benin Correctional Centre on Sapele Road on October 19. The Edo Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo, paraded the 126 suspected criminals, including the 10 escapees, arsonists and looters of COVID-19 palliatives at the state’s police headquarters in Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin on Wednesday. The Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mentioned on Tuesday that 43 hoodlums, who invaded its Abuja camp, had been arrested by security operatives composed of officers of the Nigeria Police Force and soldiers, and some of the stolen items recovered. The DG NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, while speaking at the NYSC camp, Kubwa Abuja said the hoodlums came in at 7 a.m. and burgled the store where the FCT administration kept palliatives for COVID-19 victims but found the store empty as everything was distributed since July. Some of the items that were carted away included mattresses, stationeries, boots, and uniforms of potential corps members.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has warned that with the level of misuse of the social media that has made fake news order of the day, Nigeria is sitting on a time bomb. The Minister made the statement yesterday when he appeared to defend his 2021 budget before the House of Representative Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values. The Federal Government has set up a committee to engage youths, representatives of Civil Society Organisations, religious and traditional leaders on the fallout of the recent #EndSARS protests. The decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council in Abuja, on Monday, chaired by Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo and attended by Governors of the 36 States of the federation, FCT Minister, Central Bank Governor, Inspector General of Police, representatives from the Military, the Directorate of State Security, and the National Human Rights Commission, The NEC meeting, which lasted for more than four hours reached a resolution and appointments were made into the newly established committee. Deliberations were made and solutions were sought to bring peace to the various States where the youths have been on rampage, like addressing the deeper issues behind the #ENDSARS protests and its fallouts by both the Federal and the State governments.
President Muhammadu Buhari has finally spoken over the purported shooting of peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki gate in Lagos state last week Tuesday. The president came under serious criticism after his nationwide broadcast on Thursday when he could not speak about the incident.
