The Federal Government has on Saturday issued a directive to Vice-Chancellors of public universities as well as inter-varsity centres, to stop payment of all lecturers who are on strike and have neglected their duties. The directive, which was contained in a memo issued to universities and inter-varsity centres by the National Universities Commission (NUC), was signed by the Director, Research, Information and Technology, Dr S.B. Ramon-Yusuf.

The approval was granted during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo at the State House Villa, Abuja.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite nationwide industrial action on Sunday, November 4th, 2018, over non-implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which it signed with the FG.

The union, headed by its National President professor BiodunOgunyemi, announced the strike with immediate effect after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), in Ondo State.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued three months ultimatum to the Federal Government to admit Law graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) into the Nigerian Law School. ‎

The students’ body gave the ultimatum in a statement signed by ‎Taiwo Bamigbade, NANS Senate President and Abdulakeem Rufai‎, Clerk of the association on Thursday in Abuja.‎‎

They said NANS had patiently watched how after five years of graduation, the NOUN law graduates had been denied admission into the Nigerian Law School as provided in the NOUN students handbook, which is a legally binding contract.‎

Tens of thousands of Nigerian students may spend an extra year in specialized institutions after graduation to make them employable, the DailyTrust reports. 

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, put forward the proposal at the ongoing Retreat for Governing Councils of Nigerian Federal Universities, organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) with the theme, “Elements of Statutory Governance, Procurement and Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities.”
