Since the Government has lost monopoly of violence to criminal gangs and life has become totally cheap and unsafe in the country it is high time that the National Assembly enacted a law to provide for compulsory military training or military service for citizens of Nigeria without any delay,” Falana said.

Five soldiers have been killed in a Boko Haram ambush in Borno State.

The incident occurred in Gwoza Local Government Area on Thursday, a statement by the army said.

The troops, of 271 Task Force Battalion had run into the ambush while on a clearance operation along Pridang-Bitta in Gwoza Local Government Area, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Texas Chukwu, said in a statement.

Some protesting members of the outlawed Independent Peoples Of Biafra (IPOB) have been arrested by the police in Enugu State.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Danmallam Mohammed, who confirmed the arrest told Channels Television that the IPOB members, numbering 21 were arrested while protesting in front of the Government House in the state capital.

“My attention was called that there were some group of people in front of the government office wearing IPOB and Biafra movement flag. I moved into action with some of my officers and we arrested them,” he said.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has begun the process of a nationwide recruitment following recent approval by the federal government.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, said in a statement on Monday that the agency’s recruitment portal  has been opened to receive applications.

He did not disclose the number of new personnel to be recruited under the exercise.

At least 37,000 Nigerians who sat for a computer-based aptitude (CBA) examination organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as part of recruitment process into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the exercise.

6,000 successful candidates are expected to be enlisted into the NPF as constables.

Speaking while monitoring the examination in Abuja, JAMB Registrar, Dr. Ishaq Oloyede, congratulated the Nigeria Police for approaching the Board in search of excellence.

The controversial Nigerian Peace Corps bill has finally been jettisoned as attempt by the House of Representatives to override President Muhammadu Buhari failed on Thursday.

The House of Representatives which boasted it would override the veto of the Buhari could not achieve its aim.

The bill seeks to turn the Peace Corps, currently a non-governmental organisation, into a government para-military agency.
