The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state will not negotiate with a ‘politicised’ Nigeria Union of Teachers, noting that their demand should fall within the program he has designed for primary school. At a stakeholders forum organised by the State Universal Basic Education with the theme “Improving collaboration in the provision of basic education” in Benin on Monday, the Governor said there was no going back in his quest to improve basic education, which he said was the foundation of whatever the people are today.

The Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has suspended the indefinite strike it had embarked on - on Feb. 5 over outstanding arrears of minimum wage and other demands. NASU and SSANU under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) had embarked on a nationwide strike on Feb. 5, to compel the Federal Government to address their demands;

Scientists in a groundbreaking feat have cloned the first U.S. endangered species for the first time, a black-footed ferret duplicated from the frozen genes of an animal that died over 30 years ago. The clone, named Elizabeth Ann was revealed to the world on Thursday by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in Fort Collins, Colorado. FWS coordinator Pete Gober said “You might have been handling a black-footed ferret kit and then they try to take your finger off the next day,” “She’s holding her own.” "Genomics revealed the genetic value that Willa could bring to her species," added Ryan Phelan, the executive director of conservation organization Revive & Restore, which was involved in the project.

The Senior Staff Association Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) declared that they will embark on a nationwide industrial action on February 5, 2021, in an effort to compel the Federal Government to comply with their demands. This was revealed by Mr. Peters Adeyemi, NASU General Secretary, in a statement jointly signed by Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, on Thursday, in Abuja. According to Adeyemi, after the meeting with the FG this week, both unions have called for general meetings with all branches and would go on strike on the 5th of February.

The Federal Government on Wednesday granted provisional licences to 20 new private universities to operate in Nigeria. The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by the President Muhammadu Buhari

The National Examination Council (NECO) on Tuesday January 26, announced a new date for commencement of its 2020 Senior Schools Certificate Examinations, SSCE (external). NECO spokesman Azeez Sani, in a statement, said the board has moved the examination scheduled to commence on February 1, 2021, to Monday, February 8, 2021, and end on Wednesday, March 10, 2021. NECO says the new date was set in response to requests by candidates to be given time to complete their registration process for the 2020 SSCE External. The examinations were previously scheduled to commence on February 1 and end on March, 3.
