Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Friday appealed to President Bola Tinubu for urgent federal intervention to address rising insecurity in parts of the state. Mr Mohammed made the request after a meeting with Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he briefed State House correspondents on the worsening security situation.
President Bola Tinubu has formally asked the National Assembly to commence the process of amending the constitution to provide for the establishment of state police, describing the move as critical to addressing Nigeria's worsening security crisis. The President made the appeal on Wednesday night during an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the Senate at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, resigned on Tuesday, clearing the way for the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the new police chief ahead of the 2027 general elections. Disu, who was elevated to the rank of AIG in March 2025, is slated to succeed Egbetokun, who was appointed by the President on June 19, 2023. The IG's extended tenure drew much criticism in 2024, when Egbetokun officially reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Koughna, on Sunday escaped an ambush by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State, military authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred while the commander's convoy was travelling through a forested and volatile stretch of terrain en route to visit frontline troops deployed in the state. Major General Koughna also serves as Commander of Sector 2 under Operation Fansan Yamma, a joint task force operating in the North-West.
In the states of Adamawa and Borno, troops from Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI have stepped up their efforts against Boko Haram. They have taken weapons and drones used to target security personnel, neutralize insurgents, and arrest collaborators. "Troops of Sector 4 under 28 Task Force Brigade apprehended 28-year-old Ismail Muhammed, a terrorist logistics supplier, in the Visik General area of Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State," the military said in a statement released on Friday and signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, OPHK's Media Information Officer.
The Nigerian Army has announced that its troops have overrun a terrorist camp in a forest in Kogi State, recovering a cache of arms and ammunition during the operation. In a statement posted on its official X handle on Wednesday, the army said the raid was concluded under 'Operation IGBO IDANU I', targeting criminal elements operating within the state. According to the statement, the operation delivered “a decisive strategic blow to a notorious terrorist network linked to Kachalla Ibrahim and Shu’aibu in Kogi State”.
