The Director-General, State Security Service, SSS, Oluwatosin Ajayi, says there is need to allow some communities to acquire some level of armament to serve as their first line of defense amidst delay in security response to communities. Mr Ajayi made this call at the maiden annual lecture of the National Association of the Institute for Security Studies, AANISS, on Thursday in Abuja.
The Nigeria Police Force has come out to refute the allegations raised by the Senate on 3,907 firearms missing from its armory. The Senate Committee on Public Accounts had on Tuesday summoned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to respond to audit queries flagged in the 2019 Auditor General Report. According to the audit report by the Auditor General of the Federation, 3,907 arms could not be accounted for, thereby prompting the Senate to demand explanations.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting police operatives from carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti). Additionally, he has strongly warned officers against human rights violations, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to upholding these rights. During a virtual meeting with strategic police managers, Egbetokun expressed concern over repeated complaints of human rights abuses received through the Force’s complaint channels.
