Massive Global Internet Outages Hits Top Sites Like CNN, Reddit, Amazon, Google, Others

Websites and apps around the globe went down on Tuesday morning, including government websites like Gov.UK, e-commerce websites like Target, and media websites like CNN and the New York Times. The outage affected a myriad of websites particularly around Europe, the Americans, Asia, and South Africa. Some of the high profile websites include Amazon, Reddit, and Twitch, PayPal, Shopify, BBC.com, HBO Max, Vimeo. The problem seems to be related to an outage at Fastly, a cloud service provider, which underpins a lot of websites. Fastly provider helps improve load times for websites and provides other services to internet sites, apps, and platforms, including a large global server network. The provider supports news sites and apps like CNN, the Guardian, the New York Times and many others. It also provides content delivery for Twitch, Pinterest, HBO Max, Hulu, Reddit, Spotify, and other services.

SpaceX In Talks With NCC To Launch Satellite-Based Internet In Nigeria

Elon Musk’s US-based Space exploration company, SpaceX said it is working with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to secure the required licenses to launch Starlink, its satellite Internet service, in Nigeria. Starlink’s Market Access Director for Africa, Ryan Goodnight along with SpaceX consultant, Levin paid a visit to the NCC during which they discussed the possibility of obtaining licenses to operate the satellite internet in the country. It appears that SpaceX had been in many virtual discussions with the NCC for several months, and both parties finally agreed on a face-to-face meeting to deliberate the project’s prospects in the country.

Amazon To Set Up African Headquarters In South Africa

American multinational e-commerce and technology company, Amazon has announced that it would be setting up its African Headquarters in Cape Town, South Africa. This follows the approval for a new R14 billion development of a 15-hectare land by Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust, which will host Amazon’s new African headquarters. The design aims to create a 150 000 sqm2 mixed-use space for commercial and residential purposes across two precincts. Other parts of the development include hotel, retail, gym, restaurants, school, conferencing, and events spaces.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian communications satellite Limited (NigComSat) in efforts to deploy the Fifth Generation (5G) Network communications technology in the Country. Chairman, Board of Commissioner at NCC, Prof. Adeolu Akande said the development will play a critical role in achieving improved broadband and ultra-reliable latency communication, noting that several governments have commenced license spectrum 5G network for commercial use.

Airtel Appoints New CEO For Africa Office

Telecommunication company, Airtel has appointed Olusegun Ogunsanya as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its African subsidiary, Airtel Africa, the company disclosed in a statement on Thursday. Ogunsanya will take over from the current head, Raghunath Mandava who is set to retire from his post as Director of Airtel Africa on 30 September 2021. According to the company, Ogunsanya will assume office on October 1, 2021, and join Airtel Africa’s board on the same day. He joined Airtel in 2012 as MD and CEO of the Nigerian office, the largest market in Africa.

Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Facebook Inc, American technology company has on Monday announced that the company has planned to launch a number of audio products, including clubhouse-style live audio rooms as well as features to enable users to find and play podcasts.
