The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has signed 5 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the national companies of Ghana, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone in regard to the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project. According to a statement by the NNPC, the signing ceremony took place on Monday in Rabat, Morocco, and the MoUs were signed on behalf of Nigeria by the Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), NNPC, Mele Kyari along with his counterparts from Morocco and the 5 other African countries.
Kyari said, “Today, we will be attaining another feat by signing 5 MoUs with the national oil companies and relevant entities from Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone.
“From the inception of the project to this stage, concerted efforts have been made by the governments of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco, which led to the very commendable achievements recorded thus far.
“NNPC Limited will facilitate the continuous supply of gas and provide other enablers such as the required land for the first compressor station to be deployed in Nigeria, which is among the 13 stations earmarked along the pipeline route”.
The 5,600km gas pipeline is expected to travel through 13 African countries i.e. from Nigeria, Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, The Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania to Morocco; out of the 13 African countries, 6 countries are yet to be included in the MoU.
The pipeline is expected to have 13 compressor stations in each of the 13 countries and the pipeline project is forecasted to cost $25 billion.
