There is tension in Kenya as opposition leader Raila Odinga prepares to be sworn-in as President of Kenya on Tuesday. NAN reports that already, hundreds of his supporters have gathered at Uhuru Park, downtown Nairabi to witness his inauguration although security forces had warned that the act was treasonable and would not be condoned.
Odinga had boycotted the rerun election in October 2017 allowing the incumbent, President Uhuru Kenyatta a smooth sail to his second term. The first election which was held in August was annulled by the Supreme Court over irregularities.
President Kenyatta was sworn in for the second time in November after being declared winner of the rerun.
Odinga had described the poll as fake hinting that a 'peoples assembly' would swear him in on December 12, 2017. The swearing in by the referred assembly failed to take place on that date.
The report said by 0600 GMT, over 400 hundred people had gathered at the Uhuru park to witness the event, without restrain from security operatives, although security agencies had vowed to prohibit any illegal assemblies on Tuesday.
Reuters quoted opposition elements as saying that Odinga won the August election and his swearing in was a legitimate exercise.
“The swearing in that will happen today is legitimate based on the Aug. 8, 2017 election. Odinga is the one we recognise as the president and that is why we are swearing him in.
