Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, the architect of Germany's 1990 reunification and mentor to Angela Merkel, has died at age 87, his Christian Democratic Union party (CDU) said on Friday. He was aged 87. Kohl served as chancellor for 16 years -- from 1982 to 1998 -- and was Germany's longest-serving leader since 1945. He worked tirelessly for the reunification of West and East Germany, in the post-war era.

At least a total of 58 people are likely dead or missing, presumed dead, in the awake of the fire which engulfed the London Grenfell Tower block earlier this week.
