An Iraqi court on Sunday sentenced a French woman to life in jail for membership of the Islamic State jihadist group, an AFP reporter at the courthouse said. Melina Boughedir, a mother of four, was sentenced last February to seven months in prison for "illegal" entry into the country and was set to be deported back to France, but another court ordered her re-trial under Iraq's anti-terrorist law.

A senior North Korean official will hand over a letter from the country’s leader Kim Jong Un to U.S. President Donald Trump in a rare visit to the White House on Friday as the two sides try to put a derailed summit meeting back on track. Trump hopes to meet Kim in Singapore on June 12 and pressure him to give up his nuclear weapons, although he conceded on Thursday that might require more rounds of direct negotiations.

Iran is seeking support from fellow OPEC members against the returning U.S. sanctions and wants the issue on the agenda at the Vienna meeting in June, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh wrote in a letter to Suhail Al Mazrouei, the energy minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who holds the OPEC presidency this year and will be chairing the meeting.

Canada has filed a challenge at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium; hours after the European Union (EU) initiated a similar dispute. “These unilateral tariffs, imposed under a false pretext of safeguarding U.S. national security, are inconsistent with the United States’ international trade obligations and WTO rules,” Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement on Friday.

Malaysia on Wednesday announced a crowdfunding campaign to raise money from its citizens to pay off it’s $251bn (N90.6tr) national debt. In the first 24 hours since the Malaysia Hope Fund — or Tabung Harapan Malaysia — was launched on Wednesday, donations totalled $1.76m.

The second search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 ended Tuesday after a fruitless 90-day sweep of the southern Indian Ocean. US-based Ocean Infinity had been using a deep-sea vessel to survey a vast area of the southern Indian Ocean, but found nothing and Malaysia's government says it has no plans to begin any new searches.
