Worried by the growing cases of robbery, kidnap and one chance in Abuja the capital city, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi has said that issuing colour codes for taxi cabs operating in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would address the rising incidents of ‘one chance’ robberies.
He made the assertion while playing host to the FCT Minister, Muhammad Bello, who paid him a working visit.
It was gathered that the minister was at the Corps Marshal's office to discuss the traffic and security challenges in the city.
Oyeyemi described the use of unpainted taxis as a security risk, noting that robbery incidents involving unregistered vehicle operators popularly known as one chance could be resolved through colour-coding cabs and commercial buses operating in Abuja.
He said, “The FCT has overtaken Lagos in vehicle registration; Though, this translates to more revenue, it is putting more demands on infrastructure.
The existing laws are enough to ensure safety on FCT roads if enforced.
The Corps Marshal presented a roadmap to the minister on resolving the traffic congestion in the FCT arising from noncompliance to regulations as well as counter-measures to the identified challenges.
He identified the traffic challenges in FCT to include illegal motor parks, disregard for traffic control signs, driving against traffic, abuse of siren, non-use of pedestrian bridges by commuters, parking on service lane and sidewalks by motorists, traffic light violation and other infractions.
Oyeyemi recommended the deployment of security personnel to enforce traffic laws in strategic parts of the city and enforcement of the ban on tricycles and motorcycles from the highway.
On his part, the minister lauded Oyeyemi for the initiative which he said would be implemented within the next few weeks, adding that tricycles and motorcycles would no longer be allowed to operate in Asokoro and Life Camp areas of Abuja.
