Some Senators have accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of doing the hatchet job by collecting huge sum of money from interested parties to facilitate the removal of Senator Dino Melaye, Senator Representing Kogi West from the Senate.
Senator Dino cited order 14, repeated his allegations against the state Governor, Yahaya Bello, as the sponsor of the recall campaign.
Reacting to a point of order earlier raised by Sen. Melaye, the Spokesperson of the Senate, Sen. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said there is no provision in the 2017 Appropriation Act of INEC for the recall of any lawmaker, raising questions as to how the Commission got fund to carry out the exercise. He the INEC must come out clean on this matter to avoid certain consequences.
Similarly, Sen. Peter Nwaoboshi accused INEC of acting in a manner that suggests it is acting a script of a paymaster “the main issue is INEC. The speed at which they are going is as if they are working the script of somebody; it is just as if they are asked to go and remove Dino. With what they are doing, it means a governor can just sit down, concoct signatures and say somebody should be removed,” he added.
The Senate has since vowed to review the ongoing recall process by verifying signatures submitted to INEC by the petitioners.
