The Inspector General of Police has reportedly restored all security details of the Governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano, including his Aide de Camp (ADC). The move may not be unconnected with a directive by President Muhammadu Buhari that security details attached to the Governor be immediately reinstated.
The President according to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adeshina, gave the order on Wednesday in Awka, the Anambra state capital. The statement read in part.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the reinstatement of the security aides of Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State. While welcoming the President on arrival Wednesday in Awka for the grand finale of the All Progressives Congress Governorship rally, the governor had complained about the withdrawal of his security aides.”
The Senate had earlier ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to reinstate all security details attached to the governor within 24 hours. The Senate gave the order on Wednesday during plenary. Confirming the reinstatement of the details, Chief Victor Oye, National Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) said all the details have since resumed duties.
The IGP had ordered the withdrawal of Governor Obiano's ADC claiming that he could influence the outcome of Saturday's governorship election in the state. In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, the IGP said "the development was based on the previous experience the police recorded whereby the military caught an ADC to “a governor” escorting a vehicle loaded with arms on Election Day.
“We do not mean anything bad to Anambra governor on this action; his ADC will be returned to him early Sunday morning after the governorship election on Saturday November 18. We have equally withdrawn all the policemen attached to political appointees, Local Government Chairmen and others in Anambra till after the election,” he added.
