The Independent Service Delivery Monitoring Group (ISDMG) has expressed worries that no political party or individual has bothered to verify the voters register provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) since 2011.

ISDMG’s Executive Director, Dr Chima Amadi, who briefed newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, said that there would be no credible elections without credible voters register.

He regretted that same political parties that would come up with allegations about manipulation of the voters register would still not make any effort to examine the voters register and bring complains and objections to INEC.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, far away in Washington, USA, has commended the Nigerian Senate for standing up in defence of the nation's democracy which came under attack on Wednesday when some hoodlums invaded the Senate and snatched the Mace, disrupting plenary.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, who led hoodlums to the National Assembly on Wednesday, to snatch the Senate’s mace during plenary, has been arrested. 

The mace is the symbol of authority of the Senate.

Omo-Agege was arrested at about 2:00 PM outside the National Assembly building. A source in the National Assembly told our correspondent that the suspended senator has been led away by the Police.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has condemned the invasion of the Nigerian Senate by some hoodlums, describing it as a ‘dangerous precedent and an assault on Nigeria’s democracy by anti-democratic elements’. Atiku who made his position known in a series of tweets on his verified Twitter handle said the security breach was a serious threat to the nation's democracy.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said the majority of Nigerian youths like free things because of the prevailing impression that the country is rich in oil and generates huge revenue from the sale of crude oil. According to The Cable, the President stated this while speaking at the Commonwealth Business Forum in Westminster.

Nigeria’s candidate, Amb. Peters Emuze has been elected to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) in a keenly-contested election held at the UN Headquarters, New York.

Emuze was elected for a four-year tenure.

He would be representing the African continent on the panel from 2019 to 2022.

His victory, in clinching one of the two Africa’s seats on the board of the committee for at least four years, is seen as a ‘feather’ for Nigeria.
